EXPLANATION OF THE TARTAN SASH
The Tartan Sash The Texas Cardinals, Incorporated, have adopted the Nova Scotia tartan sash to wear at General Grand Sessions as part of our uniform in support of Rennie Ofton's running mate, Fred Clarke, currently the Right Worthy Grand Sentinel, GGC. Rennie is currently the Right Worthy Grand Conductress of GGC and will be Most Worthy Grand Matron in 2009 along with Fred, who will be Most Worthy Grand Patron. Fred Clarke will be representing Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The Nova Scotia tartan sash reflects the profound contribution of the Scots to the founding of Nova Scotia and was the first Provincial Tartan Sash in Canada. Originally designed by Bessie Murray and adopted by the province in 1955, its blue and white are for the surf-ridden sea, green for the forests, red for the Royal Lion on the arms of Nova Scotia and gold for the province's historic Royal Charter. Prince Edward Island (PEI) is represented by the other band on the tartan sash. People of Scottish descent make up the largest ethnic group on PEI. To recognize their contribution in settling PEI, a design by Mrs. Jean Reed was adopted as our provincial tartan sash in 1960. The reddish-brown signifies the redness of the soil, the green represents the grass and the trees, the white for the caps on the waves, and the yellow is for the sun.
